September 2025 in Year 2
Welcome to Year 2
In September, year 2 have been incredibly busy showing how amazing they are.
As mathematicians, they have explored number working on place value. Children have worked with two-digit numbers to partition in different ways to show how that number can be made. Children have compared and ordered numbers as well as positioned them on a number line. They have revisited the 2, 5,and 10 times table from year one and begun to look at the 3 times table. Children have noticed patterns within the tables to help them remember them. They have then applied their knowledge to solve reasoning problems.
As scientists, children have been exploring animal habitats. They have thought about what animals live where and why they live there. This has been done in an enquiry base way where children have been able to show their thinking in a way of their choosing. Be that using large building blocks, loose parts, paint or paper.

As geographers, the children have begun work on the theme ‘Super Shropshire’. They have explored maps and discussed the difference between human and physical features. Using maps of the local area they have planned and plotted a walk into Ironbridge and thought about what features they will see on their walk.

The children have been enjoying their ‘Favourite Five’ texts this month. They have read:
'What We Will Build' by Oliver Jeffers
'The Rainbow Bear' by Michael Morpurgo
'The Ugly Five' by Julia Donaldson

October in Year 2
The children have been very busy this month!
In literacy, some children have read the story 'The Rainbow Bear' and have rewritten the story with their own character. The children worked hard to include adjectives and 'and' to link their ideas together.
In maths, the children started to use their jottings to add one and two digit numbers together. They then used this knowledge to answer word problems and answers questions in arithmetic.
In science, children continues to explore a range of habitats and thought about how animals adapted to be able to live happily within these habitats.
In RE, children looked at a range of religions and a range of religious celebrations. Children also began to explore some symbols that are important to these religions.
In geography, children continues to explore Shropshire. They looked at human and physical features and began to understand the four points on a compass. The children also walked down to Ironbridge to explore a range of human and physical features within our local environment.
November in Year 2
What a busy month we have had in Year 2!
In Literacy, some of the children have been focusing on a couple of our favourite five texts to think about how they can retell the story in their own words. The children have then written their own versions of these stories changing the main character and the plot line.
In maths, the children have focused on adding and subtracting using jottings. The children have completed 2 digit add 2 digit calculations as well as 2 digit subtract 2 digit. They began using equipment to help them before using lines to represent the tens and dots to represent the digits. They blew our socks off with how well they did. We look forward to seeing the children apply this to solve problems.
In science, the children have been learning about different living things. They discussed what makes something a living thing. As a year group, the children went on a walk around the school grounds to see what they can find what was alive, not living or never been alive.

As part of history, the children have begun thinking about Rosa Parks. The children have researched what happened on the bus on December 1st 1955. Through enquiry based learning the children have explored how her actions changed the world we live in today.
The children have taken part in a cheerleading workshop where they have experienced how to perform lifts with one another and different cheerleading commands.. This is set to become an afterschool club in the spring term.

The children have also performed their performance poetry to their parents. They all learnt the poems 'Now I am Six' and 'Mice' including using actions to add meaning. We were so proud of them and how well they did, perform in clear voices, with expression and smiles across their faces.

December in Year 2
January in Year 2
Year 2 have been very busy this term!
In literacy, the children have been writing character descriptions of Plague doctors and describing scenes from ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’. The children interviewed each other to find information about The Great Plague. The children in phonics have been working hard reading books such as ‘Jade’s Party’ and ‘Vulture Culture’.

In maths, the children have been learning how to use their jottings to times and divide numbers. They have also used their knowledge of division to explore fractions. This week in maths, children have just moved on to learning about time. Year 2 have explored o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to on the clock.

In science, children have been learning about materials. They have explored materials that are absorbent and the suitability of materials for everyday objects.
In history, the children have been exploring The Great Plague and The Great Fire of London. They have learned how The Great Plague spread so quickly and all about the Plague doctors and compared them to doctors we have now.

February in Year 2
Again another busy month for Year 2.
In literacy, the children have been continuing to work on the text ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’. The children have unpicked the text, looking at the language features and identifying ways to improve the vocabulary for their retell of the story.
In maths, the children have been learning how to read and write the time as well as 2D and 3D shape names and their properties.
The children’s Key instant recall facts are also being practised.

The children have had a lot of fun in their Design and Technology lesson. They had to design and make a healthy wrap. The children researched different wrap fillings, look at what a balanced diet looks like and the create their own wrap to make, safely chopped produce and of course the best….or not in some cases (there were some strange combinations) eat them!

March in Year 2
The children in Year 2 have been very busy this month.
In literacy, they have been writing instruction about Woodlands’ new lunchtime routine. The children told the instructions to the class verbally, then used instructional writing features to write detailed instructions.
In maths, the children have been exploring direction. They now know the clockwise and anticlockwise directions! The children have also been exploring money. They have looked at the different coins and notes and have added these up to make different amounts. They are now starting to explore how to find change from an amount of money.
In science, the children have been learning about Plants. The children went on a walk around school to find different plants. They have started to explore the lifecycle of plants, and how animals can help this.

April in Year 2
Year 2 have been very busy this month!
The children in Literacy have been exploring the story 'The Koala Who Could'. They have started looking at ways to convince the koala to leave his tree. The children have used persuasive language to persuade the koala.

In Science, the children have been exploring plants. The children walked around the school ground exploring the different plants and trees. They also looked at the lifecycle of a plant, and what they need to survive and grow.
In Art, the children have been using clay. They practised their skills by making a pinch pot out of clay. They looked at ways to indent into the clay and ways to fix extra clay to the product. The children then created their own tile with a Tudor house design.

May in Year 2
In Maths, the children have revisited the 4 operations and have completed number sentences and word problems focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In Literacy, the children have been exploring persuasion. They have written letters to characters from the story 'The Koala Who Could' to persuade him to leave his tree!
In Science, children have continued to explore plants. They explored the lifecycle of plants, what they need to grow and survive and have started to explore the appropriate growing conditions.

The children have been busy this month with stay and learn, a visit from the Exotic Zoo to help their science and literacy learning, celebrating VE day and raising money through taking part in the fancy dress fun run!
